The problem

Why farm soils are losing their fertility

Soil organic carbon is the organic matter that feeds soil life, holds water and makes nutrients available to roots. It is the single best indicator of a fertile soil, and across much of India it is now low.

Chemical fertilisers feed the crop, but they return no organic matter to the soil. Used heavily, season after season, they leave organic carbon being used up faster than it is replaced. Microbial life declines, soil structure weakens and nutrients get locked up.

How the decline happens

  1. Heavy chemical inputs: high doses of urea and NPK feed the crop, not the soil.
  2. Organic carbon falls: organic matter is used up and not replaced.
  3. Soil life weakens: fewer beneficial microbes to cycle nutrients and protect roots.
  4. Fertility drops: poorer structure, less water held, nutrients locked up.
  5. More inputs needed: more fertiliser for the same yield, and the cycle repeats.
